Substance Use Disorder Crisis in Indiana - Stats and Resources
Indiana has been grappling with a drug overdose epidemic for nearly two decades. The state's age-adjusted drug overdose rate reached a staggering 29.4 per 100,000 in 2017, marking a statistically significant 22% increase from the previous year. This alarming rise in drug overdose deaths has been fueled by the increasing use of non-opioid substances, such as cocaine,benzodiazepines, and amphetamines, across Indiana's 92 counties.

- From 2016 to 2017, Indiana had the third-highest drug overdose rate increase in the nation, behind only New Jersey (29%) and Nebraska (26%).
- In 2017, there were over 1,800 drug overdose deaths in Indiana, averaging a significant burden.
- Drug overdoses in Indiana have nearly doubled since 2010, growing from 923 to 1,809 in 2017.
- Approximately 4,000 Hoosiers have died from opioids in the last decade.
- Indiana's drug-induced mortality rate quadrupled between 2000 and 2014.
- More Hoosiers now die from drug overdoses than car crashes.
- Between 2012 and 2016, deaths related to synthetic opioids in Indiana increased over 600 percent.

Alcohol-Related Deaths on the Rise
In addition to the drug overdose crisis, Indiana has also witnessed a significant increase in alcohol-related deaths. According to the 2020 statistics:
- There were 1,027 alcohol-related deaths, a staggering 196.0% increase from 2000.
- The alcohol-related death rate was 15.2 per 100,000 people, a 166.7% increase from 2000.
- Indiana's population in 2020 was 6,754,953, an 11.1% increase from 2000.
